SWAN, ANNA HAINING (Bates), giantess; b. 7 Aug. 1846 at Mill Brook, N.S., one of 13 children mention Alexander Swan and Ann Graham; m. 17 June 1871 Martin Van Buren Bates, known as the “Kentucky giant”; d. 5 Aug. 1888 at Seville, Ohio.
